Il progetto SILCO nasce dalla cooperazione di tre gruppi di ricerca.
The overall objective of the SILCO project concerns the strategic recovery of CO2 and its reuse. This ambitious goal will be pursued by involving high-quality research groups with a long tradition in the study of materials preparation, catalytic processes and heterogeneous catalysis, with a successful track record in this direction. The SILCO partnership will therefore have at its disposal complementary multidisciplinary expertise and multi-plant equipment suitable for achieving the project objectives.
The consortium is constituted by the Politecnico di Milano, the University of Genoa and the University of Milano Bicocca.

The Materials for Energy and Environment (Mat4En2) laboratory belongs to the Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” Department of Politecnico di Milano, where it has been founded in 2007. Its research activity focuses on the production and analysis of materials characterized by a low environmental impact for building and water treatment applications, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of industrial products processes, development and testing of fuel cells components and ceramic materials. All these topics are addressed in several courses taught by Mat4En2 faculty at the Schools of Engineering, Architecture and Design. The group collaborates with Italian and European universities, research centres and companies; it is also active part in many international research and exchange projects.
Prof.ssa Cinzia Cristiani
Degree in Chemistry; PhD degree in Industrial Chemistry (Politecnico di Milano; 1990).
She is associate professor at Politecnico di Milano, School of Industrial Processes Engineering (Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” Department).
Her research activities regard preparation, characterization and testing of: 1) natural-based and waste-derived sorbents materials for wastewater treatment, 2) materials for metals recovery from end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment; 3) natural-based and waste derived materials for improved feed and drug delivery applications; 4) coating deposition on structured substracts with complex geometry; 5) heterogeneous catalysts for energy production and environmental protection. Moreover, she is active in wider society learning projects and activity with schools.
Dott.ssa Corinne Gandelli
Diploma in Accounting and Commercial Expert; English language diploma.
She is in staff of the Administrative office with the main tasks: Preparation and management of accounting and administrative documentation for Italian, European and international research projects; Monitoring of expenses and verification of correct attribution of costs; Drafting of financial statements for financed projects, respecting the deadlines and guidelines provided by the financiers; Collaboration with the projects teams in preparing documentation for funding requests and ensuring consistency between projects design and reporting; Management of relationships with the project PI , with partners and with financiers regarding management, accounting and reporting aspects; Participation in audits and periodic checks requested by financiers or competent authorities.
In SILCO project she is staff of the PI for governance, coordination and administrative reporting.

The Laboratory of Catalysis and Catalytic Processes (LCCP) is a research group established in the early ‘70, under the guide of Professor Pio Forzatti. It has pioneered multidisciplinary research in the science and engineering of heterogeneous catalysis. In the last decades the research activity of the group has gradually expanded from applications in industrial chemical processes to novel fields associated with energy conversion, environmental protection and sustainable production of chemicals. The mission of LCCP is the education of students via relevant research in the multidisciplinary field of catalysis science, spanning from fundamental research to industrial applications, with a strong connection with the industrial world and world-leading universities and research centers.

Prof. Luca Lietti

He is full professor at Politecnico di Milano, School of Industrial Processes Engineering (Energy Department).
His major interests are in heterogeneous catalytic processes, especially for energy and the environment. He has developed interdisciplinary skills and expertise in mechanistic and kinetic investigations, aiming to clarify the relationships between the surface and structure properties of catalysts and their ability to guide chemical reactions along specific pathways. Current researches and investigated aspects include mainly CO2 hydrogenation to fuels and chemicals, NOx storage-reduction catalysts for NOx abatement in mobile sources, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis over Co- and Fe-based catalysts, catalytic soot oxidation and combined soot-NOx removal, Ammonia SCR of NOx.

At the Laboratory of Surface Chemistry and Industrial Catalysis, studies on adsorption and catalysis phenomena on ceramic solids have been underway for about fifteen years.
In particular, studies are underway on the following technologies:
• catalytic production of hydrogen from (bio)alcohols and hydrocarbons (PRIN-MIUR projects).
• preparation and characterization of materials for the production of fuel cells (FISR Research in collaboration with the INSTM Consortium)
• purification of methane-rich biogas for energy production (PNR Research and collaboration with EcoDeco, a European project and collaboration with Ansaldo Fuel Cells and CIMA).
• development of new catalytic materials for the abatement of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from industrial production exhaust gases (collaboration with CESI-ENEL).
• catalysts for the production of sulfur-free Diesel fuels with the Fischer Tropsch process (collaboration with ENITECNOLOGIE)
• study of the interactions between organic materials and elastomers for the production of new eco-friendly tires (collaboration with Pirelli and Consorzio INSTM)
• development of new catalytic technologies for the simultaneous or non-simultaneous abatement of nitrogen oxides and carbon residues from the exhaust gases of Diesel engines and industrial production.
• development of catalytic technologies for the purification of polluted waters (FIRB project and collaboration with CIMA)
• development of new acid catalysts for new processes (skeletal isomerizations, dehydrogenations) to be developed in refineries for the production of "reformulated" gasoline, i.e. less polluting.
• partial oxidation reactions of hydrocarbons, for the production of chemical intermediates (monomers for the production of plastics, commodities) from raw materials such as oil and natural gas).

She is associate professor at Università di Genova - Civil, Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department
The main research topics are related to characterization and catalytic activity of solid catalysts for oxygenate compounds conversion, fuel upgrading, VOC combustion. In this field she investigated the redox and acid-base properties of catalysts surface and reaction mechanisms through the use of FT-IR spectroscopy in controlled atmosphere and the adsorption and co-adsorption of probe molecules. She is also involved in the investigation of composite materials for adsorption technologies and new modified biodegradable polymers.

The Chemistry of inorganic and hybrid materials (NanoMat@Lab) was founded by Prof. Franca Morazzoni and aims at the synthesis by soft-chemistry and at the functional characterization of inorganic pure and hybrid materials for energy saving.
The main fields of research are Nanostructured materials for catalysis, photocatalysis and energy storage and Inorganic nanofillers for multifunctional polymer nanocomposites. The first topic concerns the synthesis by soft-chemistry methods of morphology-controlled oxide nanoparticles (e.g. TiO2 , ZnO, MoO3) and tuneable porous systems (macro/mesoporous silica or Metal Organic Frameworks, MOF), and at the study of their (photo)catalytic mechanism (formation and interfacial reactivity of paramagnetic defects) by spectroscopic and spectromagnetic techniques. On the other side, the research focus on the preparation by bottom-up approaches of oxides nanoparticles (mainly ZnO and SiO2) and polysilsesquioxanes (PSQ) with controlled morphological and surface features, employed in a wide range of applications (i.e. automotive, high-performance dielectrics, gas-barrier).

She has advanced experimental background in design and development of nanocomposite, hybrid and smart materials, as well as deep knowledge in inorganic chemistry. Her research interests are nanostructured oxides and organic-inorganic hybrid materials for environmental cleaning (photocatalysis), design and development of rubber composite.

He is associate professor at Università di Milano-Bicocca - Materials Science Department
The main research interests are focused on the design and synthesis of i) inorganic functional and structural materials, mainly pure or mixed oxides with controlled structure, morphology, surface characteristics and defectivity and ii) hybrid organic/inorganic nanocomposites, for application in the field of photocatalysis, luminescence material, sensing and automotive.

He is a post-doc researcher at Politecnico di Milano, School of Industrial Processes Engineering (Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “Giulio Natta” Department)
He mainly works in two research fields:
1) design, preparation, and characterization of innovative non-fluorinated composites, mainly based on graphene oxide (GO) and its functionalized derivatives, for proton exchange membrane fuel cells;
2) modelling of experimental data extracted for novel sorbent materials applied to the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) or other species from end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment.
Dr. Sergio Molina-Ramírez

He is a post-doc researcher involved in SILCO Project.
His main research interest regards the transition and transformation catalytic-process technologies. His researched has been focused mainly on the development of advanced catalytic coupled technologies (DPNR-SCR) for pollutant emissions abatement in diesel engines (NOx, soot, SOx, …), analysis the synthesis of biofuels and novel advanced fuels and its impact in pollutants, study of decarbonization strategies for the utilization and conversion of CO2 and the use of hydrogen as an energy source.
Dr. Lorenzo Viganò
Degree in Chemical Science and Technology, Master’s degree in Chemistry, PhD degree in Materials Science and Nanotechnology (Università di Milano-Bicocca)
He is a post-doc researcher at Politecnico di Milano.
He has experience in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic oxides, in the investigation and application of waste materials as high-added value products and, thanks to international collaborations, in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in water phase and CO2 methanation under photothermal double-excitation.
